REX NEWELL ARTIST EXTRAORDINAIRE
Rex Newell is one of Australia's best-known and best-loved artists. His depictions of rural towns and significant buildings in heartland Australia are legendary. They have earned him the admiration of such collectors as HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The Prince's private collection includes at least one of Rex Newell's paintings.
 |
The artist is a master of infusing light and life into what he paints. The results are classic - the significant architecture of a town is enlivened by a boy and his dog, or a group of youngsters honing their cricket skills.
|
Rex Newell has been responsible for several significant series of paintings, including:
Illustrations for the book "The Favourite Poems of Henry Lawson".
The Classic Aussie Pubs section of the Perth Mint's Australian Heritage Building series. This was a limited edition, framed set of hand-signed prints published by the Perth Mint in conjunction with their commemorative minting of a Holey Dollar coin and an associated dump medallion depicting a colour map showing the location of the relevant pub. The Classic Aussie Pubs set of six sold for Aust $2,370 each. The Perth Mint reports that all 100 sets have sold out.
The book "Famous Australian Pubs", featuring Newell's famous pub scenes, is an icon of Australian memorabilia.
His latest project is a cricket series depicting the game being played at grassroots level in tiny rural towns across Australia. These charming artworks were commissioned by New South Wales University, Sydney. They are about to be released in a limited edition, the details of which remain under wraps. But we are able to give you a sneak preview of a couple of the individual artworks.

A Stickly wicket,
by Rex Newell. |
For ArtisticMementos.com, an exciting prospect is in store because Rex Newell has discovered the South Island of New Zealand, and fallen for the beauty of its environment and the character of its establishments. We hope to team up with him to produce reproductions of his creations depicting certain iconic buildings and scenes particularly in Central Otago. All we can say, as at March 20 2006, is "watch this space".
Rex Newell's art enjoys a loyal and enthusiastic following, particularly in Australia, and fetches prices as high as Aust $45,000.
