EXAMPLES - LANDSCAPES
Here is an example of a photograph that needs some cropping in order for it to be optimised for rendition into an artistic memento.
The uncropped photo is this one (above). Below is the cropped rendition that is more suitable for processing,
You will see that the more suitable cropped version has more subject focus. The power pole at left is cropped out, as is the neighbouring roof in the right foreground. We judge that the cropped shot is the better one to work with, but the client in this case could ask for the extraneous objects be covered by painting over with patches of cloned surrounding vegetation. The result is the example below.
Our preference would probably still be for the cropped version (no.2), even though we see some merit in having some sky and distant evidence of green fields in the bottom, modified version (no.3). The small amount of sky is seen as something of a distraction in this case. Remember, we are ultimately creating an artwork, rather than enhancing a photograph.
One of the conclusions from the above is that creating artistic mementos is rather subjective and certainly not an exact science. We rely on your initial judgement, but also rely on our own judgement and experience in creating the final artwork.
